ABOUT THE WINTER TABLEAU CONCERT SERIES:

The Winter Tableau program was inspired by "The bare trees and
snow-covered landscape of Winter," says music director Mark David
Buckles. "They evoke isolated yet fantastic feelings of a place that
is foreign, yet familiar. The unceasing rotation of the changing
seasons reminds us of the cycle of cause and effect that dominates not
just our own lives, but the natural world."

The concert, which features three world premieres and three Boston
premieres, is centered around "Karma," a 15-minute sextet that probes
musical ramifications of cause and effect. Yip's themes undergo a
musical transformation that reflects the Buddhist morality, "what you
do at present is the cause of your future life."

Shorter works by Anthony Lanman, Moshe Shulman, Aaron Stepp, and Tiven
Weinstock explore an array of timbral and rhythmic possibilities.
Lanman's "Sonata 46," written for the ensemble Duo 46, catapults the
listener into an electrifying dialogue between violin and guitar,
Schulman's "Frozen Moments," for flute, violin, cello, and piano,
navigates coloristic sound worlds isolated by silence. Stepp's "…and
in such lies there is a precious truth," and Weinstock's "Voyage to
Saturn," for clarinet and pre-recorded tape, explore the departure
into and return from the otherworldly.

The program also includes a special preview of songs from "Tramps,
E-mails, & Hemlock," three chamber operas to be premiered by Juventas
this spring. Marcus Maroney's "Songs from Rock Hill," for soprano,
clarinet, and piano, is inspired by Schubert's "Der Hirt auf dem
Felsen" and explores solitude through contemplation, prayer, and love.
Peter McMurray's "Broken Down," for saxophone and pre-recorded tape,
examines the deconstruction and disintegration of standard usages of
the saxophone, physically, by breaking the instrument apart, and
stylistically, through the use of different established styles of
playing from free jazz to R&B.

"Juventas really champions musical diversity," exclaims Erin
Huelskamp, executive director. "New music has a myriad of forms of
expression, and Juventas showcases this with contrasting works from
across the spectrum. From lyrical melodies to shifting sound masses,
it's a program that everyone is sure to enjoy!"

BEHIND THE SCENES VOLUNTEER: Paul Bohn, technology director

Biography:

Co-founder Paul Aaron Bohn is the technology director of Juventas. The
son of Deborah and Daniel Bohn, he is a native of Saint Louis,
Missouri. During the day he is Production Engineer at the Boston
University Electronics Design Facility where he builds sweet gadgets
for research scientists. At night, Paul holds the official title of
Juventas Tech Geek! He received a Bachelor of Science in electrical
engineering from Northeastern University.

Paul enjoys web-development, computer programming, audio recording, and
of course, music. He constantly strives to identify innovative ways
for technology to aid Juventas. In addition, his engineering interests
include analog and digital circuit design, computer
hardware/architecture, and solid-state circuits, devices, and
materials.

Paul studied the violin at University of Missouri St. Louis with John
McGrosso, Rebecca Rhee, and viola with Professor Sheila Brown, all
members of the Arianna String Quartet. He worked at Bearden Violin
Shop, where he trained with Gregory and Gene Bearden for over four
years on string-instrument restoration.

----------------------------------------------------------

QUESTION AND ANSWER:

Juventas: What motivates you to donate your knowledge and time to Juventas?

Paul: Juventas is a source of creative energy and a place for
expression. I draw upon this energy to express what I do best;
technology has a tremendous power to advance the ensemble's mission by
opening new pathways and streamlining the group's organization. I
donate my time and resources to Juventas for art, community, and
friendship. While serving the Juventas mission, I get a great deal in
return. It allows me to observe the transformation of ideas into
reality. I get to witness the work that I do for Juventas make a
difference.

Juventas: With this in mind, are there any new technical developments
for Juventas?

Paul: With technology, we are focusing our efforts to refine and
develop a unique nonprofit management website. The goal is to use
information technology techniques to improve all aspects of our
organization's operation. This will allow us to manage many different
ensembles that rehearse in different locations, thus providing a means
to expand the breadth of artistic diversity at our performances. Two
examples recent developments include major updates to our Members
Section and an electronic library of new music.

TRAMPS, EMAILS, & HEMLOCK
a word from Michael Sakir on the chamber operas

Juventas's joint opera project with OperaHub is turning into an event
of Wagnerian proportions! This collaboration brings together stylish
and inventive operatic performances with raw, passionate music
composed by three emerging composers. Last month's audition process,
in which members from both organizations heard dozens of young Boston
singers, yielded exceptionally talented casts for the three
commissioned chamber operas.

Rehearsals will begin in the new year followed by three full-scale
performances at The Boston Conservatory's Seully Hall.

CONTRIBUTE TO JUVENTAS AND NEW MUSIC!

Two years ago, Juventas exploded onto the new music scene to fill a
niche in critical need of attention – a performance outlet for the
music of young composers, at the start of their careers. Every aspect
of our ensemble is expanding to meet new musical, organizational, and
financial needs.

Our third season features new events providing the best young
composers in the world with superior performances. Our new residency
at the Boston Conservatory and our first performance outside New
England are part of our effort to connect the music of our time with
the broadest possible community.

We focus on producing concerts that our audiences appreciate. Your
gift gives strength to the musical dreams of upcoming composers and
enhances their connection with you as an audience member.

As an all-volunteer organization, our operating costs are minimal.
Your gift will significantly impact our music and ability to grow.

We rely on your generosity to increase our efforts. Please consider
