          Picture
Giselle Ty is a freelance stage director based in Boston and New York.  She has been on the directing staff for numerous opera productions including Il Mondo della Luna (Gotham Chamber Opera), Death and the Powers Workshop (M.I.T. Media Lab/A.R.T.), La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein, Fidelio, Cardillac, Maria Padilla, Béatrice et Bénédict, and A Midsummer Marriage (Opera Boston).

This season's projects include directing Francesco Cavalli's La Calisto for the Harvard Early Music Society (Dec 8-11 at the New College Theatre) and the world premiere production of Ketty Nez's The Fiddler and the Old Woman of Rumelia for Juventas' New Music Ensemble (May 3-6 at the Roberts Theatre in the BCA's Calderwood Pavilion).

Also an active member of the Boston theatre community, she served as assistant director on Endgame (American Repertory Theatre), Trigger (A.R.T./M.X.A.T. Institute for Advanced Theatre Training), and The Hyacinth Macaw (Harvard University) and was a teaching fellow for many years with longtime A.R.T. company members at Harvard's DCE/Summer School.  She is artistic associate and member of the season planning committee at Company One and has directed new plays for the Boston Theatre Marathon, Phoenix Theatre Artists, Company One (SLAMBoston), Massachusetts Young Playwrights' Platform, and Exquisite  Corps Theatre.  She has appeared onstage with the Actors' Shakespeare Project, Company One, and as a Nibelung (gold-mining dwarf slave) in Robert LePage's production of Das Rheingold at the Metropolitan Opera.

Having always been dedicated to exploring and learning from a variety of forms, she studied music and art history in college and began her career in the arts as a classical trumpeter.  She is a graduate of Northwestern University's School of Music in Evanston, IL. A nomad and wanderer at heart, she is thrilled to be joining Juventas in Rumelia for their 2012 Opera Project.
